There are multiple schools in and around New York City that offer licensed practical nursing (LPN) programs. Two of the largest schools, LaGuardia Community College and Bronx Community College, both offer certificate programs.
CUNY LaGuardia Community College's Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) Program
The City University of New York (CUNY) LaGuardia Community College's Health Sciences Department offers both nursing and practical nursing programs. The department also offers physical therapy assistant, mental health, dietetic technician, radiologic technology, mortuary science and veterinary technology programs.
Practical Nursing Certificate
CUNY LaGuardia Community College's LPN program prepares graduates to work as practical nurses in healthcare settings offering acute and chronic care services. Upon completion of the program, graduates are able to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN). The 48-credit practical nursing certificate program consists of pre-clinical and clinical phases. Coursework includes pharmacology and nutrition, human biology, psychology, medical dosage mathematics, fundamental nursing concepts, medical surgical nursing, pediatric nursing, maternal child health nursing and mental health nursing.
Topics covered as part of these courses includes diagnosis recognition, implementing care plans, mental health disorders and documenting client outcomes. In addition to classroom instruction, students gain hands-on experience in campus laboratory settings and local healthcare facilities. Field experiences take place in settings such as community health facilities, nursing homes and hospitals.

CUNY Bronx Community College's LPN Program
CUNY Bronx Community College is home to a Department of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences. Through this department, the school offers a practical nursing certificate. The department also offers a registered nurse associate degree program.
Licensed Practical Nursing Certificate
The LPN certificate program at CUNY Bronx Community College is 56 credits and takes place primarily on weekends and evenings. Required pre-clinical coursework includes composition and rhetoric, anatomy and physiology, psychology and interpersonal communication. The LPN program's nursing courses are offered during the clinical phase and include anatomy and physiology, maternal child nursing, pediatric nursing, psychiatric nursing, infection control, medical surgical nursing and mental health concepts.
Students are also required to complete a series of nursing skills courses, which cover medication administration, medical terminology, diagnostic testing procedures, pharmacology computation and communication for healthcare professionals. Graduates are eligible to take the New York State NCLEX-PN.
